Peter has preached that in God’s plan Jesus was crucified, raised, and exalted as Lord over all the universe and that forgiveness of sin and spiritual renewal can be had from him. “As I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell on them just as on us at the beginning. Most people in the world have no experience of lasting joy in their lives. All of our resources exist to guide you toward everlasting joy in Jesus Christ. The Pentecostals are right to stress the experience of being baptized in the Spirit. Now the positive thing I want to say about the moderate Pentecostal teaching (represented by the Bennets) is that it is right to stress the experiential reality of receiving the Spirit. We must give an open expression of faith in the act of water baptism in obedience to Jesus Christ. It is the Spirit who inspires us to address each other “in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” and to “[submit] to one another out of reverence for Christ” (Ephesians 5:18–21). And you trust his promises for your future. We must “receive the word.” Verse 41: “So those who received his word were baptized.” Receiving the Word means that it becomes part of you so that you trust the Christ it presents. But we can only go so far. It turns out, the most important things in life are not simple. I think we would say something like, “I thought we automatically received the Holy Spirit when we believed. Holy spirit is something that is always with you, no matter how hard the situation may seem, you can feel the supporting presence of Holy Spirit if you are a true believer. The Holy Spirit was the breath of God personified. That’s why Jesus spoke of the Holy Spirit in personal terms (notice the pronoun he throughout): The Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. All of our resources exist to guide you toward everlasting joy in Jesus Christ. The Bible instructs believers to examine themselves, but does it tell us to what extent or how often we should question our salvation? (John 14:26). It seems risky to me to say, since it happened this way four times it must happen this way all the time. Answer: There are three occasions in the book of Acts where speaking in tongues accompanied the receiving of the Holy Spirit—Acts 2:4, 10:44-46, and 19:6. The collective human genius still does not understand things like gravity, human consciousness, and even what matter is at the subatomic levels — things we experience all the time. For many Christians today it is a fact of doctrine. It is easy to imagine a spiritual counselor saying to a new convert today, “Don’t expect to notice any difference. [The Holy Spirit] can be lied to (Acts 5:3), resisted (Acts 7:51), grieved (Ephesians 4:30), blasphemed (Matthew 12:32; Mark 3:29; Luke 12:10). When Jesus breathed on his disciples — a resurrection miracle in itself! And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him. He communicates the Father’s love to us (Romans 5:5; Ephesians 3:14–19) and infuses the Christian life with joy (Acts 13:52; Romans 14:17; 15:13; 1 Thessalonians 1:6). In this chapter we will learn what the gift of the Holy Ghost is and how we can receive this great gift from God. (2) How do we receive the gift of the Holy Spirit? . The Scriptures do not teach, here nor elsewhere, that the Lord, in answer to prayer, supernaturally infuses His children with the Holy Spirit. And is the Holy Spirit a person—the third person of a trinitarian Godhead? The sovereign God must call men and women to himself, or they will never come. (275), They call this “the scriptural pattern of the ‘doctrine of baptisms.’”. When you read the New Testament honestly, you can’t help but get the impression of a big difference from a lot of contemporary Christian experience. Listen to how Jesus speaks of this reality: I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. The Holy Spirit does everything. (Hint: The early Church did not teach that the Holy Spirit is a person. (John 16:13–14). We are attempting to put words to things too wonderful for us. 3 They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 2 When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 1. “John immersed in water; you will be immersed in the Spirit.” If the Spirit overwhelms you like a baptism, you can’t imagine him merely sneaking in quietly while you are asleep and taking up inconspicuous residence. The consequence of faith: The fourth reason we should stress the experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit is that in Acts the apostles teach that it is a consequence of faith not a subconscious cause of faith. Acts 2:38-39 Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. Question: "Is speaking in tongues evidence for having the Holy Spirit?" “keep on being filled with the Holy Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18). Scriptures for Receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. It is not merely the performance of rituals and sacraments. In sacramental churches the gift of the Holy Spirit is virtually equated with the event of water baptism. The Word has been heard. The Holy Spirit would remain with them all after Jesus died, was resurrected and returned to the Father. This is why Paul can say in Acts 19:2 when he meets the confused disciples of John the Baptist, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” What would a contemporary Protestant evangelical say in response to that question? As my colleague, David Mathis, has so helpfully catalogued. Tongues is not mentioned, but since the language is the same as at Cornelius’s house (fallen Acts 8:16; fell Acts 10:44), it’s likely the Samaritans spoke in tongues, too. The Spirit is also given to us so that, with him dwelling in us, we are able to have fellowship with one another. When you are filled with the Holy Spirit, you will always be in Gods mind because He through His Spirit will always interceed for you. In Protestant evangelicalism it is equated with a subconscious work of God in regeneration which you only know you have because the Bible says you do if you believe. Therefore, I invite you to experience the greatest thing in the world: Repent, trust Christ, open yourself to the power of his Spirit, be baptized in his name, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. It took hundreds of years for this doctrine to develop!) 4. If ye receive not the Spirit, ye shall not teach, D&C 42:14. The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. And that’s a lot of us! We find reality easier to experience than to explain — both physical and spiritual reality. This is no different than what Paul said in Romans 8:14, “All who are led by the Spirit are the sons of God” (see 2 Corinthians 13:5 and 1 John 3:24; 4:12–13). He is author of. The only other place tongues is referred to in Acts is 19:6. There were no unbaptized Christians after Pentecost. Acts records at least nine other conversion stories, but never again mentions a two-step sequence with tongues (Acts 8:36; 9:17–19; 13:12, 48; 14:1; 16:14; 17:4, 34). You don’t have to speak in tongues to have times of feeling filled with the Holy Spirit, but if you want the free and full outpouring that is the baptism in the Holy Spirit, you must expect it to happen as in Scripture. God initiates it by enabling us to believe (Ephesians 2:8–9; 2 Timothy 2:25; John 1:13). Terminology: The very term “baptized in the Holy Spirit” (1:5; 11:16) implies an immersion in the life of the Spirit. Then, you are baptized in water. To answer this objection, we must first review the Bible's stated requirements for receiving God's Spirit: "Then Peter said to them, ‘Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit'" . He appoints leaders in the church (Acts 20:28), confirms God’s word with miraculous gifts (Hebrews 2:4), sanctifies our imperfect efforts (Romans 15:16), knits us together as a fellowship (2 Corinthians 13:14; Hebrews 6:4), and fills us with praise (Acts 2:4) and with boldness for ministry (Acts 1:8; 4:8, 31; 6:5; 7:55; 9:17; 11:24; 13:9, 52). We’re on a mission to change that. I’ll take the negative first so I can end with the positive. The NASB correctly says in verse 17 that God gave the Holy Spirit after they believed. What Jesus does teach in Acts 1:5, 8 is that the experience of baptism in the Spirit will bring power to witness into the Christian life. 3. When Jesus baptizes you in the Holy Spirit, and infuses you with a new sense of the glory of God, you have a new desire and a new power (Acts 1:8) to obey. The Full Surrender. New King James Version Baptism was the universal experience of all Christians in the New Testament. 2. But we have done wrong in limiting Paul’s understanding of the baptism in the Holy Spirit to this initial, subconscious divine act in conversion and then forcing all of Luke’s theology in Acts into that little mold. . The Breath was not an it but a he. . 2. “You will be baptized with the Holy Spirit . First, the word of the gospel is received by faith. In him we are sealed, kept, and secured by God till the end (Ephesians 1:13–14). The God who keeps watch over the nations, this God still speaks today. Heartfelt praise and worship is the mark of a real experience of the Holy Spirit. There is only one God and He is the third divine person of the Trinity. I am aware that in 1 Corinthians 12:13 Paul says that baptism in the Spirit is an act of God by which we become a part of the body of Christ at conversion, so that in his terminology all genuine converts have been baptized in the Spirit. Christ had commanded it (Matthew 28:18–20) and the church practiced it. It begins in Acts 1:5 where Jesus says to his disciples, “John baptized with water, but before many days you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.” Then in verse 8, he says, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses.” The fulfillment of these two promises came on the day of Pentecost. Jesus wanted the Holy Spirit also to be sent to anyone else who believes in Him, in Jesus. . He especially points us to the Son. The nature of the Holy Spirit is revealed to us not to dissect, but to receive and embrace and trust and love. Let’s walk with them through the book of Acts to see where they get their evidence. 5. The second reason is the tendency of some to see the receiving the Holy Spirit in the early church as recorded in the book of Acts as the model for us today. 3. This is why Jesus said, “It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you” (John 16:7). You trust his path for your life. If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. . In the terminology of Acts we could say, what a powerless Christian needs is a baptism in the Holy Spirit. He was not simply the force or power of God, but God himself. We must. The Bible instructs believers to examine themselves, but does it tell us to what extent or how often we should question our salvation? But one thing is sure: the heart in which the Holy Spirit has been poured out will stop magnifying self and start magnifying God. . And when you really turn to Christ for new paths and new power, you open yourself to the Holy Spirit, because it is by his Spirit that Christ guides and empowers. Romans 8:9. But if I go, I will send him to you. And, generally, following water-baptism at some later point, you pray for the baptism in the Spirit and are overwhelmed with a new fullness and freedom and power accompanied by speaking in tongues. . For them the Holy Spirit was a fact of experience. He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. brings power for evangelism:-"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." “While Peter was still saying this the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. I sometimes fear that we have so redefined conversion in terms of human decisions and have so removed any necessity of the experience of God’s Spirit, that many people think they are saved when in fact they only have Christian ideas in their head not spiritual power in their heart. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.’” Matthew 3:11. The two questions I want to try to answer today are: (1) What does it mean to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit? What Jesus revealed to his apostles when he came was that the one God (Mark 12:29) exists in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19). The preached word is heard with conviction and power only when the effectual call of God lays hold on the hearers. In fact, most of my messages are just that — descriptions of the experience of the Spirit of God in the life of the believer. When we’re tempted to cynically question the strangeness of it all, it’s helpful to remember that we find all of reality strange the deeper we delve into it. When Jesus was baptized, he went under the water for us — so that he might represent us, and so that we might be with him forever. Christianity is not merely an array of glorious ideas. When Jesus was nearing His trial and crucifixion, He promised his apostles that He would ask God to send them His Holy Spirit. (John 15:26). I close by pointing you to Peter’s instructions for how to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2:38–41: 1. I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized in water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.’ If then God gave the same gift to them as he gave to us, when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I should withstand God?”. In addition to the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit, the Bible also tells us that there are 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit.. For the record, we feel that the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit are much more important than the 9 gifts are. “I believe in the forgiveness of sins.” Those words may have become stale or even cliché for some, but they represent the beauty and scandal of our confession. John 16:13 - Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall … The second experience is the receiving, or making welcome of the Holy Spirit so that Jesus can cause Him to pour out this new life from our spirits, to baptize our souls and bodies and then our world around, with his refreshing and renewing power. Along with the Spirit, Jesus Christ is in us (Colossians 1:27), as is God the Father (1 John 4:15). And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributed and resting on each one of them and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.”, The next time tongues is mentioned in Acts is when Peter went to preach at Cornelius’s house in Acts 10:44–46. Receiving the Holy Spirit gives the Christian the spiritual power needed to live a Christian life. But we are not always equally full of the Holy Spirit. You don’t have to speak in tongues in order to have the Holy Spirit in you. In itself that is relatively unimportant. Yes! 18 When Simon saw that the Holy Spirit was given through the laying on of the apostles’ hands, he offered them money, 19 saying, “Give me this power too, so that anyone I lay hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.” Acts 10 46 For they heard them speaking in other languages and declaring the greatness of God… Acts 19 How to Receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit, John Piper is founder and teacher of desiringGod.org and chancellor of Bethlehem College & Seminary. So the baptism of the Spirit (verse 16) or the receiving of the gift of the Spirit (verse 17) cannot be the same as the work of God before faith which enables faith (which Luke speaks of in Acts 2:39; 5:31; 16:14; 11:18; 15:10; 14:27). It may be present or may not. . 4. On pages 64–65 the question is posed, “What if I don’t speak in tongues? The second experience is the receiving, or making welcome of the Holy Spirit so that Jesus can cause Him to pour out this new life from our spirits, to baptize our souls and bodies and then our world around, with his refreshing and renewing power. There are five reasons why I am not as confident as the Pentecostals are that speaking in tongues is a necessary part of being baptized in the Spirit: 1. Paul explains to them that John pointed people forward to Jesus, and so verse 5 says, “On hearing this they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 3. And it is only in the Spirit that we will experience together “unity . We don’t know how much the apostles understood of the Holy Spirit’s nature in the moment Jesus breathed on them, but they would soon come to understand that the Spirit was also their Lord and their God. This shows how difficult it is to establish a norm from the way things happened back then. However, these three occasions are the only places in the Bible where speaking in tongues is an evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit. The fact that the apostles fully embraced the Spirit’s personhood is clearly seen in how they speak of him in the New Testament. And having said this, He breathed on them and He says to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. Thomas, who wasn’t even there to witness this moment, confirmed that he grasped the implication eight days later when he called Jesus, “my Lord and my God!” (John 20:28). The baptism in the Spirit is an experience of the Spirit given after faith to faith. Christ comes into your life by the Spirit. He was not merely a vague emanation of the presence of God; the Breath of God was not like the breath of humans. Holy Spirit sustains, energizes, and keeps you on a holy … The Spirit’s primary work is to show us the unique glory the Father receives from the Son and the Son from the Father in the plan of salvation (John 17:1–5). Paul says in 1 Corinthians 12:30 that “not all speak in tongues” and the words he uses are for general tongues speaking, not merely for a special “gift of tongues” used in church. The Holy Spirit is given to us so that, with him dwelling in us, we are able to fellowship with the Father and the Son. But I’ll mention two things from the book of Acts — things that mark the experience of being baptized in the Holy Spirit or of receiving the gift of the Spirit. It could be that there were special circumstances in Jerusalem, Samaria, Cornelius’s house, and Ephesus that made speaking in tongues especially helpful in communicating the truth that the Holy Spirit was creating a new unified body of Jew and Samaritan and Gentile. Whenever we speak of the nature of the Trinity, or any of the distinct persons, we are way over our heads. The Holy Ghost knoweth all things, D&C 35:19. He seems to have in view the person who feels ostracized without tongues and says (verse 16), “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body.” Paul responds, “Not everybody speaks in tongues!”, For these five reasons I cannot say with the Pentecostals that no Christian has been baptized in the Holy Spirit unless he has spoken in tongues. In Acts 5:29 Peter and the apostles say to the Sadducees who had arrested them, “We must obey God rather than men.” Then in verse 32 he says, “We are witnesses to these things, and so is the Holy Spirit whom God gave to those who are obeying him.” (“Gave” is past tense; “obey” is present, ongoing tense.). In Acts 10:46 the disciples knew the Holy Spirit had fallen because “they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling (or magnifying) God.” Speaking in tongues is one particular way of releasing the heart of praise. The Holy Ghost teaches the peaceable things of the kingdom, D&C 36:2 . On the evening of Resurrection Sunday, as most of the disciples were locked away in their hideout, trying to come to terms with the implications of an empty tomb and the odd encounters some reported to have had with the risen Lord, Jesus suddenly appeared among them. So we do today. We could talk for hours about what that experience is. Our focus will be on the book of Acts and on Luke’s intention as he wrote it. He teaches us the Son’s teachings (John 14:26), he testifies of the Son to us (John 15:26), he discloses to us what the Son wants to tell us (John 16:15), and he comforts us with the comfort the Father and Son want us to have (2 Corinthians 1:3–4).
